GODSPELL Information
Synopsis: A small group of individuals carrying their own doubts and fears must come together in an unexpected space. Through playful, shared experiences they begin to form a community built on trust, compassion, and the courage to be vulnerable. At the center of it all is Jesus Christ, not as a distant figure, but as a guide who inspires connection and invites each person to see the world—and each other—differently. Godspell is about the joy and struggle of building something meaningful together: a community that learns, laughs, questions, and ultimately transforms in the presence of something greater than themselves.
The first major musical theatre offering from three-time Grammy and Academy Award winner, Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin, Children of Eden), Godspell took the world by storm led by the international hit, "Day by Day."
Characters*:
Jesus: Charismatic and high energy, yet gentle and loving. They are the deceptively calm leader of the troupe who is eventually betrayed by Judas and persecuted.
John the Baptist / Judas: Possesses the attributes of two Biblical figures: they are both Jesus' lieutenant and most ardent disciple, and also the doubter who begins to question and rebel. Like Jesus, is also charismatic, but in an overt revolutionary way.
Disciple Je - Very high energy. Impish and playful.
Disciple L - Not the brightest in the bunch, they are a little slow on the uptake. But there is great sweetness and innocence.
Disciple H: The comedian, the class clown. The person who can do a hundred voices and imitations.
Disciple R: A bit of a tomboy, but basically open and sweet.
Disciple Jo: The confident one, the show-off. Sometimes jumps in before they really understand what is going on.
Disciple P: The shy one. Sometimes a little slow to get things, but when they do, they commit all the way. Has a parental warmth to them.
Disciple S: Sassy and sightly cynical, the most urban of the group. The "sexy one" but a large element of put-on (Mae West type).
Disciple G: Another class clown. Goofy and cut-up.
Characters names were based on original cast members. Actors will use their own name during our production.
**All roles will be cast in the vision of the show and will not be determined by any other factor. Magnolia Theatre Company prides themselves on casting the best actor for the right role; not based on any orientation(s) or any preconceived notions or historical expectations.
